I come from a family of dentists. Three generations of dentists, in fact. My grandpa was a dentist, my dad is a dentist and my brother is an oral surgeon. We even have a photo of my grandpa working as a dentist during WWII.

Written on the back of the photo: Somewhere in France, doing dental work on a soldier in an apple orchard. My dental assistant on the right.
My dad retired this week, so I guess I should have said he was a dentist – in the past tense. But given how important dentistry is to my family, you can understand why it feels a little weird to say it in the past tense. My dad’s retirement has been a pretty big deal around here. Especially because now I’ll have to start buying toothpaste for the first time in my life.

On the left, my dad in dental school; On the right, getting my teeth cleaned on a Saturday afternoon last summer (which is why my dad’s is in jeans and a t-shirt, ha)
You’re probably wondering why I’m not a dentist. Well, I guess you could call me the black sheep of the family. Which is actually a compliment, considering how much I love sheep.
About a month ago, Spoonflower was offering up a free 8×8 inch swatch of their faux suede fabric – absolutely free, even shipping costs. Well hey, I use little scraps for all sorts of projects, so I decided to breeze through the site and choose a print.
Being able to choose ANY PRINT I WANTED from Spoonflower was really overwhelming, so I tried to think – “What’s the weirdest/hardest print design to find in stores?” For some reason, dentistry/teeth jumped into my head (I probably already had my dad’s retirement on my mind) so I chose this cute tooth print.
The faux suede feels pretty lovely, so I appreciate Spoonflower’s attempt to get swatches in the hands of its customers free of charge. It’s definitely fancier and more expensive than anything I’ve ever used before ($34/yard, but that’s actually not too surprising considering their basic cotton is $17.50/yard). I have no idea how it will be to actually work with this fabric, but I’m anticipating it will be slippery.
My swatch is only an 8 inch square, so I have no clue what I’ll be able to make. I’ll probably end up making the largest zipper pouch I can manage – but if you have any other ideas, let me know!
Oh yeah, and don’t forget to brush and floss!
Great blog!!
